The DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam is a nationally recognized certification administered by the Dental Assisting National Board. It evaluates dental assistants on their ability to safely expose, process, and evaluate dental radiographs while following proper radiation protection protocols. The computer-based exam covers radiation physics, biological effects, equipment operation, infection control, technique and quality assurance, and patient and operator safety. Passing the RHS is required in many states for dental assistants who take X-rays and is one of three component exams of the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential.

Assessed on this Exam

The DANB RHS exam evaluates your knowledge across these areas:

Dive Deeper into DANB RHS -
Radiation Health and Safety

What does the DANB RHS exam cover?

The DANB RHS covers three main areas: expose and evaluate radiographs (selecting techniques, positioning, and image evaluation), radiation safety for patients and operators (ALARA, shielding, and exposure factors), and infection control procedures specific to radiographic equipment and processes.

Who should take the DANB RHS?

Dental assistants who expose dental radiographs should take the RHS exam. Many states require this certification to legally take dental X-rays. It is also one of three exams needed for the full Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential from DANB.

How should I prepare for the DANB RHS?

Focus on radiation physics fundamentals, proper technique for periapical and bitewing radiographs, digital imaging workflows, and infection control protocols. Our DANB RHS question bank provides realistic practice with detailed explanations so you can identify weak areas before test day.

Prepare for DANB RHS with Confidence

Earning your DANB Radiation Health and Safety certification demonstrates your competency in dental radiography and opens doors to expanded responsibilities in the dental office. With a strong foundation in radiation safety, technique, and infection control, you prove you are ready to provide safe, high-quality patient care.
